Some exciting new details about the online features for Pokémon Diamond and Pearl have turned up. There's trading, battling and all sorts.

So what do we know so far? DP, like other online DS games, will use friend codes. If you go online wanting to battle, if your mates are online, the service will mach you up with one of them.We also know that with online battling they'll be voice chat with your opponent (where you could plug PUK, hint, hint).

So what's new? Aside from the obvious battling and trading with friends, you'll be able to trade with anyone! There's going to be a "thing" (technical term) that will allow you to say "I want x, and I'll trade you y"- then if someone else, anywhere in the country (world?) accepts this deal, you'll get trading with them. They'll apparently be a map showing you the location of the person you're trading with- let's hope that it's a world map, and not restricted to countries.
They'll also be a battle tower, that sounds sort of similar to the building in Viridian City, in the now ancient Pokémon Gold and Silver- your team will be uploaded to a central server, so that other people can download battle your squad offline (obviously the CPU will be controlling your squad... not you), and obviously, you will be able to download other squads and battle them. These teams will have their levels fiddled with to match your own squad.
Objective and balanced reporting: It's going to be excellent.
